5 Expert Tips for a Successful and Stress-Free Breastfeeding Journey

Breastfeeding can be a beautiful experience, but it doesn’t always come naturally for everyone. Whether you're a first-time parent or on a new journey with multiple children, having a few strategies in place can make the process smoother and more enjoyable. Here are five ideas to help make your breastfeeding journey easier.

why does my latch hurt?

1. Establish a Comfortable Feeding Position

Comfort is key when breastfeeding, especially in those early weeks when you're feeding your baby frequently. Experiment with different positions like the cradle hold, football hold, or side-lying position to find what works best for both you and your baby. Use pillows for support, invest in a comfortable nursing chair, or even a nursing pillow to make feeding sessions more relaxing.

Support your neck, back, and shoulders. Find a few minutes in your day to do some gentle stretching and breathing exercises to support your body and mind.

2. Nourish Yourself

Your body is working hard to produce milk, so it's important to take care of yourself. Staying hydrated and eating nutrient-dense foods can support your milk supply and boost your energy.

Healthy fats, lean proteins, whole grains, fruits and veggies, and plenty of water are essential.

It’s also important to make sure you’re getting your electrolytes in your beverages. Some caffeine is said to be fine during breastfeeding but it is generally advised to limit caffeine intake to less than 300mg a day (about 2-3 cups of coffee).

Keeping easy to eat, non-perishable snacks in your postpartum caddy or cart and a water bottle nearby during feeds can help you stay nourished.

3. Seek Professional Support Early

If you're experiencing challenges with latching, pain, or milk supply, don't wait to get help. Lactation consultants are breastfeeding experts who can offer guidance tailored to your needs. Many hospitals provide consultations shortly after birth, but you can also find support through online consultations or local breastfeeding groups. Early help can prevent small issues from becoming bigger frustrations.

We have an in-house IBCLC or Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She helps our clients ease into their breastfeeding journey with confidence. You can read more about One Love Doula’s lactation services, HERE.

Mental health support is also vital at this time. Close family and friends can provide a safe space for you to talk about your feelings. It is also important to recognize any behaviors that feel out of the ordinary, and seek professional guidance early on

4. Learn About Your Baby's Hunger Cues

Understanding your baby’s hunger cues can help you feed them before they get too upset, which makes breastfeeding sessions smoother.

Look for signs like rooting, sucking on their hands, or smacking their lips.

Feeding on demand—responding to your baby’s hunger rather than following a strict schedule—can help with milk production and create a more relaxed breastfeeding routine.

5. Create a Supportive Environment

Breastfeeding requires both physical and emotional support. Surround yourself with people who encourage your breastfeeding journey, whether it's a partner, friend, or family member.

Set up a comfy, cozy breastfeeding space where you can relax, complete with everything you might need during a session—like water, snacks, a nursing pillow, or even a book or magazine. I often suggest that new parents use this time to practice some breathing exercises that help to reduce stress and bring a sense of calm to your body and mind.

Breastfeeding is a unique journey for every mom and new parent, and it’s okay to seek out ways to make it easier. In fact, we encourage you to seek support!

We suggest that you set up a lactation visit (either in-home or virtually) while you are pregnant, in preparation of the first week of postpartum recovery. This helps you ensure a breastfeeding experience that’s more relaxed and fulfilling for both you and your baby. Remember, it’s all about finding what works best for you!
